Lesson Learned

So, a long time ago, I signed up for a class that I thought was going to provide me with helpful information to further my acting ability. At the very least, I thought that I would be able to put it on my resume, because more training=better actress, as if anyone considers training when making a final decision on a role. "Hmmm, well, she has four teeth and a beard but no hair on her head, and she mumbled through her monologue with no inflection whatsoever, but hey! Resume says Juilliard! Leading lady it is!" (And that was how a homeless man became Broadway's latest sensation.)

The community college gave no reminders, but I had it calendared, so I remembered to attend. What was the class? Well, it was about forty minutes of spiel about how the field of voice acting is growing and an easy way to make money. And anyone can do it! Which reminds me of what they always say about acting: sure, anyone can do it, but it takes training and talent and above all LUCK to make your living at it. Then it was about fifteen minutes of being recorded doing voice acting. After each take, we got "direction" (ie., the guy read the lines with the inflection he wanted. LINE READINGS! ). Then we got to hear about how if we really wanted to get started, we needed to pay $2,500 for the seminar that his company ran.

But what was especially magical was that I ended up paying $45 to hear this. Yes. I'm so pleased.

At least I can say it was a learning experience.
