As Scarlett O'Hara famously declared, "Tomorrow is another day." After an audition that didn't really go so well, I went back to the same complex to audition for a professional children's theater. This time, instead of continually preparing and timing myself and preparing mercilessly, I decided to switch which monologue I was– doing in the car, on the way to the audition, to a Shakespearean piece that I hadn't done in months.
It went beautifully. I discovered some new things about the monologue as I was doing it, and I felt in the moment and focused.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize that "Children's Theater" means daytime shows for schools, so if I do get cast in anything, I'm not sure what I'm going to do about my job. Maybe I'll just steal a mannequin from a department store and prop it up in my cube on performance days.
But either way, the one I just sort of dug up was miles better than the one that I spent three weeks rehearsing over and over again. I think there's a lesson to be learned here: sometimes it's better when you DON'T try.
